Teen Models and Benefits of Becoming a Model

Teenage years can be a very difficult time and often young girls have to deal with the pressure of school, peers and body changes. This is further exacerbated by stereotypes pushed by our media and artificial expectation of beauty. Photoshopping is has become an industry standard in the modeling and entertainment business. Nearly anyone pictured on a magazine cover is impossibly perfect. As teen girls gush over guys and stay current on pop culture, body image has naturally become another thing to worry about.

However these pressures can be reduced by teaching your teen valuable skills of self esteem, the ability to handle rejection and the pride of success. Believe it or not such skills can be taught through teen modeling. There are many common stereotypes when it comes to teenage modeling and many are negative. This often includes eating disorders, vanity issues and problems with self esteem. However these are common issues that all teen girls face regardless of their participation in modeling events. Therefore it is important to face these issues head on and teach your teen the proper way to deal with them.

Teen modeling can help your daughter learn valuable skills that will help her throughout her teen years and as she becomes an adult. However it is first important to lay the groundwork for a success and confident teenager. One of the first lessons is to teach your daughter the importance of self love and acceptance. Regardless of what the glossy pop culture magazine may tell us, we are not born with perfect bodies. It is important for your daughter to learn this and to accept herself and be proud of who she is.

While you may think that teen modeling would only encourage negative stereotypes, the fact is often the opposite. There are tremendous benefits, including the ability to deal with competition, overcoming shyness and following instructions. Teen girls also learn to become leaders and often go on to have better speaking and interpersonal skills. Teens can learn to work hard and handle both success and defeat with grace. These are critical lessons that will help your teen as she becomes a woman. Contrary to popular opinions, modeling is not all about looks. Modeling is about confidence and the ability to deal with stressful and ever changing situations with grace and skill.

If your daughter wishes to become a model then the next step is finding the right avenue to begin this new adventure. Often teens are very busy with school, friends and extracurricular activities. This can raise the question, how can you help your daughter become successful at teen modeling when you go to school every day, work a part-time job, and play sports? Well the good news is you don’t have to go to New York City to get discovered. In fact finding a place to represent you as a model can be mush easier then you may think, thanks to the internet. In the past the only option was to apply for expensive agencies and hope that your daughter is represented correctly. This often removes any control you may have as a parent and places your hopes on the shoulders of the agency, which may or may not have your daughter’s best interest at heart.

However there are new ways to become a model and ‘get discovered’ and enter the world of teen modeling through online model portfolio websites and social networking. These sites are often free and have a world-wide audience. In fact many modeling jobs, events and casting calls can now be applied for online. You can also manage your daughter’s modeling account and work directly with clients to ensure that she is receiving proper exposure.

There is a great deal of money to be made in the teen modeling industry as many companies are seeking youthful models to promote their products or brands. This can range from simple print images, promotional YouTube videos and even commercials and movies! The key is to gain as much exposure as possible and having an up-to-date online portfolio can help you attain this goal.

If your daughter shows interest in modeling then don’t be afraid to encourage and help her. The benefits, when properly managed, can be tremendous both in her personal life and professional career.
